I was on my way to drop off dinner for my sick mother-in-law when my lawyer’s urgent call stopped me from making the biggest mistake of my life—trusting the wrong person.
When I first met Matt, he seemed perfect. We hit it off instantly, and our friendship quickly grew into love—at least on my part. After a few months of dating, he proposed, and I couldn’t have been happier.
I had a stable, well-paying job and enjoyed small luxuries. Marrying Matt felt like the final piece to a perfect life. His occasional requests to borrow money didn’t bother me at first. I believed we were building a future together.
However, Matt’s bond with his mom, Linda, always felt strange. He was overly devoted to her, constantly prioritizing her needs. Many of the “loans” he asked for were to buy her gifts—gifts she never appreciated. When we bought her a microwave, she complained it wasn’t a smart one. While I was offended, Matt brushed it off, claiming I was overreacting.
We had been saving for a house, though I had contributed far more. The contract was in his name, but I wasn’t worried—marriage meant everything was shared equally. Or so I thought.
On the day we were supposed to finalize the purchase, Matt hesitated. Instead of being excited, he seemed anxious and asked to postpone, saying his mom was sick and he couldn’t focus. When I offered to help, he asked me to take her some lasagna I’d made.
As I headed to her house, my lawyer, Sarah, called me in a panic, telling me to go home immediately. Confused, I turned back, only to discover the horrifying truth—Matt and Linda were at my house, trying to sign the contract for the house in her name.
My world shattered. Sarah explained Matt’s plan: to put the house under his mother’s name, divorce me, and leave me with nothing.
When I confronted him, he had the audacity to say it was “for the best.”
“Best for who?” I demanded. “You and your mom?”
Thankfully, I arrived in time to stop them. What followed was a messy divorce, but I refused to let a man who betrayed me take anything more.
In the end, I rebuilt my life. I saved for a new home and regained my independence. I was finally free.
