On Reddit’s ‘Am I the A*e’ thread, a grandmother shared her story, torn between her own well-being and the expectations of her daughter and grandson.

At 56, the grandmother (Original Poster, or OP) explained how she was faced with a tough decision: choosing between a much-needed break or continuing to care for her 14-month-old grandson.

Her daughter, 26, had been living with her ever since her partner left, only three months after the baby was born. While OP was more than willing to help, the situation had become overwhelming.

OP explained that she regularly helped out by watching her grandson from 6 PM to 8 PM while her daughter worked. “I’ve been covering all the household expenses, and my daughter takes care of daycare and the baby’s essentials like diapers and formula. She’s even managed to save up for a future move,” OP shared.

With everything seemingly balanced, OP had planned a well-deserved month off. “I just wanted to relax at home for a month,” she explained.

However, when her daughter heard about this, she saw an opportunity to save money on daycare and speed up her moving plans.

“When my daughter found out I was taking time off, she asked if I could watch my grandson full-time during the day to save money,” OP explained.

Despite her daughter’s emotional pleas, OP stood firm. She agreed to help in the mornings but refused to babysit full-time. “I need my rest,” she said.

“She started crying, saying she’s trying her best to become independent but that being a single mom is so hard,” OP recalled. “She even begged for just three more hours of help a day, but I couldn’t agree.”

Even though OP stuck to her decision, she admitted feeling guilty. She understood her daughter’s struggles but also knew she needed to set boundaries for her own well-being.

“I love my grandson, but I need to take care of myself too,” OP said.

Her story sparked a lively discussion online, with many people offering their thoughts on the matter.

One commenter supported OP’s decision and raised a practical concern: “If your daughter pulls her child out of daycare for a month, the daycare may give his spot to another family. They can’t afford to hold it unpaid.”

Another commenter chimed in, adding, “And what happens if you burn out from all this caregiving? You’re doing a lot already, and it’s okay to say no.”

Ultimately, OP’s decision highlights the often difficult balance between family obligations and personal needs—something many can relate to.
