Cartilage tear is one of the most common injuries in the world. The cartilage is a flexible structure in the nose, joints, hands and other parts of the body which is susceptible to damage.
This type of connective tissue gets affected by the usual wear and tear over time, but some daily activities as well as athletic training can cause instant damage to the cartilage.
Cartilage regeneration is a difficult process, but recently, scientists have suggested that you can regenerate these structures by consuming a diet rich in amino acids, which improve the calcium absorption in the body and stimulate collagen production that will repair the damage.
One of the most important amino acids for rapid regeneration of the cartilage is lysine, which can help the damaged tissue heal and improve the flexibility of tendons. Lysine is also great against arthritis, a disease which affects a big part of the world’s population.
Scientific studies
According to a study conducted at the University of Maryland, lysine deficiency can seriously delay the recovery of damaged tissue, and affects the regeneration of your cells as well. The recommended amount of lysine per a kg. of weight is 12 mg. on a daily basis. Here are some foods rich in lysine:
- Legumes;
- Cod;
- Soybean;
- Red meat;
- Beer;
- Eggs;
- Cheese;
- Fruits;
Besides lysine, vitamin C is also important for maintaining proper collagen production and keeping your blood oxygenated. Vitamin C will also strengthen your immune system and accelerate the healing of wounds. Vitamin C deficiency is a serious condition which can cause numerous health problems, which is why you need to take at least 75 mg. of the vitamin daily. To increase your vitamin C intake, you should consume fresh citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and kiwis as well as strawberries.
Based on seeing the U-Maryland article about this 3.5 years ago, I started a routine of taking 10 grams of Beef Gelatin Powder and 1 gram of L-Lysine every morning. I believe this has helped heal and restore my knee cartilage/meniscus. I am 69 years old, a vigorous exerciser, and play basketball in senior tournaments around the country (temporarily suspended due to COVID). I wondered if someone is interested in my experience, or could substantiate my thinking.
