Dr. Russell Surasky, a double board-certified neurologist, recently addressed media reports speculating that President Joe Biden may suffer from Parkinson’s disease, stating that he does not believe this to be the case. However, Dr. Surasky did suggest that Biden could potentially have “vascular dementia” and recommended that the president undergo neurological testing, including an MRI, to evaluate this possibility.
Dr. Surasky ruled out Parkinson’s disease after observing Biden’s movements and the lack of typical symptoms, such as a shuffling gait, resting tremor, and cogwheel rigidity, which are hallmark signs of Parkinson’s. Instead, he noted that Biden appears to walk with a firm stride, which doesn’t align with Parkinson’s symptoms.
The neurologist expressed concerns over what he perceives as possible “cognitive decline,” which has been a topic in recent media reports. He also mentioned that some of Biden’s medical history—such as atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) and two previous brain aneurysms—could increase the risk of vascular dementia. This type of dementia can be linked to reduced blood flow in the brain, potentially causing cognitive challenges over time.
Dr. Surasky invited the president to consider a comprehensive neurological assessment to rule out vascular dementia, which would involve tests on motor skills, memory, and cognition, as well as imaging through an MRI scan to assess any potential impacts on brain health.
